San Francisco 49ers' Perrish Cox welcomes a fresh start

SAN FRANCISCO -- Playing for the 49ers this exhibition season has been extra meaningful for defensive back Perrish Cox, and his team-leading two interceptions are only a small part of the story.
The promising cornerback was an NFL outcast last season, forced to watch from home while awaiting trial on sexual-assault charges in Colorado.
"Nobody could help me. I felt I was in my own dark room by myself," the former Denver Bronco said this week. "But I escaped it."
Acquitted by a jury in March, Cox quickly signed with the 49ers. As Thursday night's exhibition finale against the visiting San Diego Chargers approaches, Cox is poised to make the roster -- and make up for lost time.

DENVER – There’s no quit in the San Francisco 49ers. Trailing 24-10 at the half to the Denver Broncos at Mile High Stadium, San Francisco’s reserves held Denver out of the end zone for the game’s final 30 minutes and scored 19 unanswered points to beat the Broncos 29-24 on the road.

Faithful fans dressed in 49ers red and gold certainly appreciated it.

After newly signed 49ers linebacker Kenny Rowe recorded a sack late in the fourth quarter to put an end to Denver’s chances of driving the field for a go-ahead score, 49ers fans yelled out Jim Harbaugh’s trademark saying, “Who’s got it better than us? Nobody!”

The paying customers saw a valiant comeback from their beloved team. Despite being outgained in yardage 348-304, San Francisco showed its mettle in a physical matchup, one with many reserve players fighting for spots on their teams’ respective 53-man rosters.

“It was a good, hard-working game,” Harbaugh said after his team improved to 2-1 in the preseason. “It wasn’t perfect, but we worked hard… A lot of guys made a statement for themselves today.”

No matter the “spotty” start by the 49ers according to Harbaugh, the team rebounded for a road win against a quality opponent.

“It says a lot about the character of the guys we have on this team,” said tight end Vernon Davis. “They kept us in the game. We have a lot of guys with high character and that’s what we need, guys who want to win and can help contribute to what we’re trying to do on this team. “

Perrish Cox made a triumphant return to Denver by making a key second-quarter interception in the San Francisco 49ers’ 29-24 preseason win over the Broncos on Sunday.

With the Broncos backed up inside their own 20-yard-line on a second-and-13, Cox stepped in front of Eric Decker to pick off Caleb Hanie’s first pass of the second quarter. The 49ers cornerback brought the pass back 21 yards to the Broncos’ 19-yard line.
“I was just reading a three-step to five-step drop,” Cox said of his interception. “I think Decker ran a skinny post, and we were in cover-three coverage. I was reading the whole triangle from the receiver to the quarterback. He threw it and Decker wasn’t looking for the ball so I broke on it perfectly. It flew right into my hands.”

Cox looked comfortable all day in the mile high air having spent his rookie campaign with the Broncos in 2010 before sitting out last season.
